My holiday job list...

Today, in our state we start a two week break.

For us it is winter break and the forecast looks terrible.

We have huge winds and rain coming our way.

So what is on the horizon? This is the first break in a while that we are not traveling anywhere and our plan is to do some stuff around the house.

I am hoping to get my phonics work completed, do a unit on biological science, finish my 'GOLD' unit and maybe start some of my Nursery Rhyme projects, mmmmmmmmmmmmm wonder how that will go?

Here is my first Phonic Bundle and I have grouped them so that once these 6 letters/sounds are known, you can make many words with them.

S-A-T-P-I-N - how many can you make?

I have put them all in one bundle - click here or on the image below
You can purchase each letter/sound separately.

You can click on the individual images for individual letter/sound packs

Each set has three posters, a series of sound cards to use for tasks, print and go tasks and a small reader that reinforces sight words as well a the letter/sound.

These are also individual packs, but not yet in bundles

I only have h, r, m, o, u, l, f, j, z, w, v, y, x and qu!

Pinterest - Bloom's verbs

What did we do before Pinterest?
Where did we get our ideas, tasks and support from?
In the endless time we spend searching (often with no clear idea of what we are looking for) we find gems that we pin to our own boards.

I just love this pin I came across when browsing the other day.

I think Pinterest has made a difference in many classrooms around the world.

3 things about me - Monday link up

So this is about three things about me - so here goes!

So - my name is Paula and I am addicted to coffee, clip art, shoes and handbags.

I have so much clip art that I could never use it all. Do I keep buying it - yes!

Coffee - one with breakfast, one when I get to work, one at recess, lunch, after school and when I get home. I cannot and will not drink inferior coffee, instant no way, decaf - are you kidding? It has to be great coffee, life is to short to compromise on this.

Handbags and shoes - well my husband may have to give away all his space in a walk in......

Happy blogging!

Literature Circles - new books

We are in the process of updating our Literature Circle books and that means reading the texts beforehand.

With a few days to go until winter break, our lovely lady in the library has been shopping and we have grabbed some titles to read.

These are the two that I scored to read over the break. Stay tuned for how our kids use them and what we think of them.

One of our new books is 'Crossing' by Catherine Norton - click here to get the first chapter for free

The blurb says....

My arms are trembling with the tension of the loaded bow.
I can feel Leon standing behind me, watching. Waiting.
Hoping.
‘I dare you,’ he whispers.
Cara has grown up in the shadow of the Wall, in a closed world of food shortages and high security. Her parents are dedicated to their secret work for the government, and it’s only a matter of time before her gifted younger sister follows in their footsteps.
It’s all Cara has ever known, until the summer she meets Ava and Leon. Ava doesn't care about rules. Nothing will ever be the same.

Another new text is

The blurb says......

Can one person make the world a better place? Or are some things simply too
big for an eleven-year-old boy to solve on his own?

When Jesse decides to help Kate ‘Save the Whales’ he realises that
sometimes, it’s the little things people do that make a difference. Will Hunter,
the school bully, ruin their efforts? Or is there more to Hunter than meets the
eye?

Bleakboy and Hunter Stand Out in the Rain is a humorous and inspirational
story about the unlikely friendship between two very different boys and the
power of small gestures.

My new planner

I received this in the mail and I love it to pieces.
Love it so much I have ordered am 18 month Life Planner to go with it.
From the packaging to all the bits, it was so exciting to unpack and write in.

I don't use it as a traditional lesson planner, but in the short time I have had it I am so much more organised.

I am a digital nut - so to take a step back and use this was a huge change.
To go to a Life Planner will challenge me but I am guessing keep me on track too.

I adore the quotes, the calendars, the stickers, the tabs and note pages.

What is it - you ask? It is an Erin Condren Teacher Planner.

Interactive Notebook for Maths

We have been implementing Interactive Notebooks for Maths.

We have a model teacher book to show how to set them out and then we do each section together step by step.

This is the set out for one page.
With the interactive parts on one side and the reflections on the other.

This is our first go!

We worked on scale and then went through a series of tasks to look at what we learnt.
After our learning we came back and recorded what we found out and had a go at recording some proof.

We were very pleased with our starting pages.

These are a series of lessons we compiled to cover a unit of work to devise a running track. Watch this space for the whole unit t be revealed.....

Reading

My Year 5/6 kids just love to read.

We do 'daily 5' and just love getting into our library and sharing books.

We read anywhere!

Font-astic favorites

The Polished Teacher has a link up about our favorite fonts.

I am a bit addicted and this was easy to do - hop on over and link up too.

Go and pick up the template and add your own favorite fonts.

You may even pick up some new favorites to go and find.

Please remember that some are copyrighted and make sure you check out the rules for using them.

Literature Circles - I just love them

This pack has taken me months to put together. I wanted to get my thinking right and ensure that it was right. It has been proofread and posted. I am so happy with it.

For 24 hours it is 50% and is only $3.00.
It will revert back to full price this time tomorrow.

Literature Circles
Introduce a role at a time for a favorite picture story book and discuss the roles and how they might look. When all the roles have been covered give students the opportunity to go back and check each role as needed. Then group your grade so that they have access to a text to share. Timetable each group and give them a timetable so that they know when they are on. Details are in the pack on to how to do this.

This pack contains 95 pages

Timetable
How to set one up….
It is best to have 5-6 in each group they need a reading session and two sessions to work on their roles before they present to the group.
Each student needs a copy of the text.
As they become more aware of each role, they can devise the timetable and share out these roles.

This pack contains the following roles
Discussion Director
Summariser/summarizer
Literary Luminary
Connector
Researcher
Word Wizard
Illustrator
Travel Tracer
and a Reflection section

Posters for display in your room

The photos in the pack show a set that have been pasted on card before laminating.
I have them in sets on rings My students use them to help with the roles as they need to.
There are pages that contain spelling for summariser/summarizer. Please check which one you need before printing

Recording Sheets
A4 size
These pages can be used to assist students to record their role.
The cards will assist with time management and role clarity

Recording Booklets
Print and go!
Two options - half page version or full page
Half page version - This will give you two books at a time – copy and staple together and then cut in half.
If you copy them back to back you will have instructions facing the task page.
There are two versions of summariser/summarizer

Happy Literature Circles – you will enjoy the rich conversations

Plural Pack

Teaching kids about plurals can be tricky as there are so many different rules, exceptions to the rules and it just goes to show that our language is hard.

This pack may help your kids with plurals by creating interactive note pages so they can go back and refer to a source that has some words to help them.

These 'I have, who has' cards will help consolidate their thinking as well.

There are also some recording sheets to help define and illustrate plurals too.

Throwback - like real throwback

Here is a bit of a giggle photo - plus an 'oh my' moment.

I am linking up with The Teaching Tribune to share a photo of me in about Grade 5.

The link up is about sharing a photo of yourself at the same age as your current grade you are teaching, plus share the background of the photo.

Well my Mum had a knitting machine....
So Mum is wearing a super cool knitted purple shirt...
My little brother is in a super cool knitted shirt (it had angel fish on it) and knitted shorts.....
My sister and I are wearing identical knitted tops (rabbits were the go) and knitted shorts......
I am just hoping Mum is not wearing knitted long pants!

The real clincher is I am about 11 and my sister is about 10 and we are
WEARING THE SAME OUTFIT

Dad must be taking the photo and I often wonder if Mum knitted him an outfit - hehehehe

New project for Lit Circles

I used to do Literature Circles a long time ago, this year we use them every day.

We have some groups reading, some preparing their roles and some presenting their work.

The conversations are rich, deep and lead to a greater understanding of the text, characters, words, story lines and empathy for others' opinions.

I needed reminding about the roles and so did my kids.

So I have been playing around with these book marks.

The role of Discussion Direction is pivotal to how the group runs. Summariser needs to be succinct, and Word Wizard aids in our understanding.

The other roles are fantastic and we rotate them and give feedback.

It is a great way to have a kid's book club.

I have taken over our lounge room at home - printing, cutting and laminating.

I have created a 25 sets so that in our shared space we have one between two.

I know my kids will use them - so now my next question is - Where to store them?

I am trying to sort out my other notes and when I do I will package them together, so watch this space!
